Less than 2 hours from Bangkok lies Khao Khiao Open Zoo, where a total of 2,000 acres of sprawling landscape and dozens of different species of wildlife await you. This upmarket camping resort is equipped with all the mod cons you could wish for – from air conditioning to mini fridges. Sleeping bags are not required as the tents even come with mattresses and all bedding is provided.
Depending on which accommodation option you choose bathrooms are either shared with other guests (there is a very well maintained bathroom building at the campsite, but we personally love the teepee style showers that are open to the sky!) or you can really splash out and have a tent complete with it’s own en suite, flat screen TV and fancy spa bathtub!
It certainly is a unique experience to sleep in a tent in the middle of a zoo, and at night you can hear the sounds of many animals, particularly birds and monkeys. As night falls, we would highly recommend the night safari trip – a fascinating way to learn about animal behaviour after dark.
Es-ta-te also houses a restaurant serving basic thai food with a stunning lakeside view – perfect for watching the sunset. If you’re spending the night in one of the tents, we highly recommend the BBQ dinner at the restaurant- a great way to meet other guests and enjoy dinner alfresco.
After a good nights sleep it’s common to wake up and find free roaming deer and peacocks wandering outside your tents door. The beautiful surroundings make for some perfect photo opportunities, so bring your camera and get snapping! The experience is also a perfect treat for animal loving kids who will love the opportunity to live amongst nature, even if only for one night.
Of course staying overnight at Es-Ta-Te means you get more time to explore the zoo itself during the day, and we think Khao Khiao is definitely worth the extra time. This zoo is a little bit different to others in Thailand, as many of the animals roam freely and great care is taken to create suitable enclosures for each of them. At Khao Khiao it’s even possible to get up close and personal with the animals, touch them and even feed them!
