Shayan Says: Flow House Bangkok, It’s More Than Just Surfing
When Bangkok rolled out its latest water-sport attraction back in 2011, very few knew what the Flow House experience would be like. The adventurer and extreme sport enthusiast in me was extremely excited to give the place a try.
I popped by with my girlfriend soon after and bought a ticket for 750 Baht for 1 hour. Having done Parkour and breakdance in the past, I figured how hard could it be?
Oh and how wrong was I. All excited and confident, I stepped on the board and before I knew it, the fast moving currents threw me the board, onto the soft yet merciless floor and swept me all the way back.
Now you get the opportunity to do the easy way or the hard way.
The easy way – bodyboard
In bodyboarding, you lie flat on your stomach on a larger board and simply surf the intensely pressured waves. Pretty easy for most I would say, but watching 4-5 year olds kill it on the ramp, I let my ego get the best of me, so I opted for the hard way.
The hard way – flowboard
Here, you are expected to stand on a slightly smaller board and surf like you would on the ocean. The good thing is that for beginners, there are trainers who help you ease in and balance by holding a rope. Don’t let that fool you though because not even 2 seconds in, I feel my body crash onto the ramp like a limp fish and I was carried swiftly to the back.
After a few tries of doing both ways and with the help of the instructors, I was able to stay on the board for at least 4-5 seconds.
A word of warning: if it is your first time, you will be sore the next day!
While this aquatic masterpiece is the feature of Flow House, it is much more than just surfing. If extreme activities aren’t your thing, you can still come down, chill, eat, drink and enjoy some good music.
Take the stairs to the 2nd floor and you can relax on some bean bags, order a cocktail and watch others try their best not to fall.
There are also some great events and promotions happening here as well and it’s a good idea to stay updated on their Facebook page.
Some of my other really memorable events at Flow House included a networking night in 2012, the BYP: Surf’s Up and the very popular Kolour Sundays in 2013. With events, promotions and the variety of options like these, Flow House is probably the “it place” to be on a hot sunny day, any day in Bangkok.
