Theta State Float Center: Bangkok’s Premier Floatation Therapy Spa
Described as a place for self discovery and relaxation, the Theta State Float Center is your own private oasis in which you can lose track of time, relieve stress and experience the feeling of being completely weightless.
At the heart of this luxury float spa are the state of the art, soundproof, lightproof, sensory deprivation tanks in which you can bid farewell to the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. Once inside your own private pod you can simply lay back, relax and wait for Nirvana.
It was as though we had been given permission to not think, for our mind not to wander and for our senses to be at rest.
While that may sound a little intense, or even a little lofty, the people behind Theta State Float Center really do believe that the sensory deprivation tanks offer a way for you to reach the deepest level of relaxation – although, as we found, reaching it may take some practise.
At exactly body temperature, being suspended in the bed of water feels somewhat how you might imagine floating in a womb or outer space might feel like. This experience – while new and unusual at first – gives your body and mind a chance to unwind while the magnesium-rich Epsom salt waters allow you to float effortlessly and drift into a meditative state of relaxation.
The medical grade salts help to detoxify your body, soothe aching muscles, and nourish your skin.
As first time floaters we were sceptical, curious and anxious to experience this for ourselves. To us, ‘sensory deprivation’ sounded like an interrogation technique that wouldn’t be particularly pleasant.
We were so glad that we were wrong.
As we each entered our own private rooms – complete with shower, herbal toiletries and soft towels – we already began to feel at ease. The rooms are small and feel personal; like they were made for only one person. We could easily move around but we felt as though this was our own space to unwind.
After a quick shower we entered our sensory deprivation tank (we opted to go in completely naked) and began our float session.
Ambient lighting and music are used at the beginning and end of the session to bring you in and out of your relaxed state and let you know when your session is ending.
The first thing you will notice about the sensory deprivation experience is just how strange it feels to lay back and not be supported by the ground. For most of us our bodies aren’t used to the sensation of feeling weightless, so it may take a few minutes to get over the initial excitement.
For the first 15-20 minutes our minds were racing with thoughts, things like ‘I can’t believe I’m actually floating’ and ‘this is so cool!’.
Soon after our minds silenced and made way for a surreal calmness and tranquility. It was as though we had been given permission to not think, for our mind not to wander and for our senses to be at rest.
The high tech pods themselves are quite spacious, however, for those who may be claustrophobic the Theta State Float Center also has float rooms available too. The rooms are bigger, and perhaps less intimidating for first-timers, as you simply step inside, close the door and lay down ready to begin your session.
After our hour session we emerged from our rooms feeling refreshed, light, and calm. Physically, our arms felt almost too heavy to lift above our heads – a testament to just how relaxed and weightless we had felt while inside the pod.
You can find this otherworldly relaxation hub on the 1st floor of the Avenue Mall on Soi Sukhumvit 24, a short walk from the BTS Phrom Phong station. Prices start at just 1,950 baht for one 60 minute float and there are range of memberships, packages and promotions available which offer a variety of discounts.
